Host a Static Site on AWS, using S3 and CloudFront in India

Amazon Web Services, or AWS, is the most popular cloud computing environment today. It has many different services that can be used together or separately, and because you only pay for what you use, it's very inexpensive to get started.

What is a static website? In short, it's a website comprised of only HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript. That means server-side scripts aren't supported, so if you want to host a Rails or PHP app, you'll need to look elsewhere. For simpler purposes, welcome to the wonderful world of hosting websites on S3!

Frequently Asked Questions

S3 is reliable. Amazon's SLA guarantees 99.9% uptime, not bad!
Compared to my previous web host S3 is fast. The whole site now loads in less than half a second compared to over a second on my previous host.
S3 is resilient and scales! Most web hosting providers limit the storage and bandwidth you can use. Cheap plans offer little space and bandwidth, expensive plans offer more. Kind of obvious but stay with me: What happens if you have a cheap plan and are suddenly featured on a major news website? Well, you go over the quota and your visitors see a nice "Error 509: Bandwidth limit exceeded" message. This isn't a problem for S3. It can scale from a few visitors per minute to dozens every second!
You pay for what you used. Traditional hosting providers charge a fixed fee every month. With S3 you only pay for what you use. For the first year Amazon gives you 5GB of (standard) storage and 15GB of outbound traffic each month. Should be enough for a small website. More info - S3 Web hosting -Amazon link
Amazon CloudFront is a global content delivery network (CDN) service that securely delivers data, videos, applications, and APIs to your viewers with low latency and high transfer speeds. CloudFront is integrated with AWS – both physical locations that are directly connected to the AWS global infrastructure, as well as software that works seamlessly with services including AWS Shield for DDoS mitigation, Amazon S3, Elastic Load Balancing or Amazon EC2 as origins for your applications, and AWS Lambda to run custom code close to your viewers.
Pay-as-you-go cloud computing (PAYG cloud computing) is a payment method for cloud computing that charges based on usage. The practice is similar to that of utility bills, using only resources that are needed
Amazon cloud computing resources are hosted in multiple locations world-wide. These locations are composed of regions and Availability Zones. Each region is a separate geographic area. Each region has multiple, isolated locations known as Availability Zones. Amazon RDS provides you the ability to place resources, such as instances, and data in multiple locations. Resources aren't replicated across regions unless you do so specifically.
Amazon operates state-of-the-art, highly-available data centers. Although rare, failures can occur that affect the availability of instances that are in the same location. If you host all your instances in a single location that is affected by such a failure, none of your instances would be available.
